One of the most frequent sites for concern that both men and women have when it comes to facial aesthetics is the under-eye area. It is common for people to have darker skin in this region, as well as fine lines, sunken skin, and wrinkles.
If you are concerned about wrinkles under your eyes, then you may be wondering how effective under eye lines Botox can be, or whether Botox can help under eye wrinkles when smiling.
We provide the latest information in the cosmetic industry to all of our students on our Botox training courses, so you can be sure that after an education at the Dr Hennessy Academy you will be adequately trained to carry out the latest and greatest procedures and also know the ones to avoid.
Can you have Botox under your eyes?
The efficacy of Botox under the eyes in the UK is unproven at best. In fact, it is generally advised that Botox is not injected directly into the wrinkles under the eyes as this can result in many side effects and potential dangers.
To effectively use Botox to treat wrinkles, the toxin needs to be injected into active muscles. By suppressing these muscles from contracting, the appearance of wrinkles will decrease and facial aesthetics will improve.
However, for many, it is not the muscles under the eyes that is the cause of their issues. Botox for eye bags for example will be relatively ineffective, as they are often caused by either the presence of bulging fat or the weakening of the orbital retaining ligament.
If under eye wrinkles are the issue, then generally Botox around the eyes will have more of an effect than under eye Botox alone. This includes injecting Botox into other areas surrounding the eye such as the forehead and crow’s feet.
How to inject Botox under eyes
If Botox is being injected to reduce wrinkles in the under-eye region, then fewer units of Botox will be used as a higher amount of Botox increases the chance of side effects appearing.
On its own, there will be very little noticeable benefits with Botox under the eyes before and after injection. will have very little noticeable benefits. Botox for eyes will require a larger presence of Botox injected into the crow’s feet for the best results, with three-four units of Botox injected into three injection sites per eye.
A substitute for Botox under the eyes is dermal fillers. This can combat the effect of hollow areas in the skin, which can accentuate shadows and make the eyes appear darker. Filler is injected using a blunt tipped cannula so an even distribution of hyaluronic acid is placed across the entire under eye trough.
How much does Botox around the eyes cost?
The cost for under eye wrinkle Botox will vary, although it will be more expensive if more units of Botox are being used. You should expect to pay between £150-£250 for your complete treatment, which may be more than you were expecting but there is a reason for this.
Because it is not recommended to treat the under-eye area solely with Botox, other treatments will have to be used to improve the aesthetics of the eye region such as a Botox brow lift or Botox injections for crow’s feet.
This will therefore increase the cost of your service than if you were expecting to only receive a couple units of Botox on its own, but your results will be far superior and you will leave your clinic much happier.
Side effects of Botox around the eyes
Botox as a whole is a very safe treatment, able to be injected quickly and with ease for most individuals with very few side effects.
Using Botox under your eyes for bags can run a higher risk of side effects developing than with other injection sites, which is why it is not a recommended treatment. Some of these side effects include:
- Eyelid swelling
- Eyelid drooping
- Headaches
- Muscle weakness resulting in difficulty blinking or shutting the eyes
Of course, there are other side effects that can occur from Botox that are less site-specific. This includes pain, swelling, and allergic reactions, among others.
